How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?
Visible thin or uneven coverage, disturbed areas, upper-floor comfort differences and an unknown upgrade history can justify an inspection. These signs do not prove that insulation is the only issue.
An assessment can review visible coverage, condition, access, air leakage opportunities and ventilation paths.
Can new insulation be added over old insulation?
Sometimes. Existing material should be dry, serviceable, suitable to remain and compatible with the planned scope. Important air-sealing or ventilation work may need to happen first.
When should insulation be removed instead of topped up?
Removal may be considered when material is wet, damaged, heavily disturbed, unsuitable for the planned work or affected by a condition that must be addressed before new installation.
What is blown-in insulation?
Blown-in insulation is loose-fill material distributed through a hose across suitable attic areas. Fibreglass and cellulose products can both be installed this way, subject to the attic and product requirements.
Is cellulose or fibreglass better?
Neither is automatically best for every attic. Existing material, product properties, access, application method and the confirmed work scope should guide the choice.
Should air sealing happen before new insulation?
It is often worth considering because leakage paths can become more difficult to reach after insulation is added. The accessible and appropriate sealing scope depends on the attic.
Can insulation fix a hot second floor?
It may help where coverage or attic air leakage contributes, but HVAC balance, ductwork, windows, solar exposure and other factors can also cause upper-floor overheating.
Can insulation fix cold bedrooms?
It can improve part of the building envelope where insulation is deficient, but it cannot guarantee a result when other systems or building conditions contribute.
Does attic insulation stop drafts?
Insulation slows heat flow but does not automatically create an air barrier. Drafts may require air sealing, and some may originate outside the attic.
What does an attic inspection check?
It may review visible material, depth and distribution, damaged areas, the hatch, ventilation paths, accessible leakage points, water staining, frost or condensation, exhaust-routing concerns and difficult-access areas.
Is an attic heat-loss assessment an energy audit?
No. An attic-focused assessment is not automatically an EnerGuide evaluation, blower-door test, building inspection or engineering report.
How is the insulation amount determined?
The installer should consider the existing assembly, material, product specifications, desired scope, accessible area and current applicable requirements. The recommendation is specific to the attic.
Can a ceiling below a room over a garage be insulated?
Potentially. Access, the existing assembly, air leakage, fire separation and other trades may affect the work that is possible.
What if the attic is difficult to access?
Kneewalls, side attics, additions and low-clearance areas may need a different method. Some areas may be inaccessible without additional work.
Can wet insulation remain in place?
The source and condition should be assessed. Active water entry must be corrected, and affected material may need drying, removal or replacement depending on the situation.
What happens if suspect vermiculite, asbestos or mould-like growth is found?
Do not disturb suspect material. An appropriately qualified specialist may be required before ordinary insulation work proceeds. Specialized environmental work is outside the ordinary insulation scope.
Can insulation block attic ventilation?
Poorly placed material can obstruct intended airflow. The insulation scope should account for applicable ventilation paths and baffles.
How should I prepare for attic work?
Confirm the hatch location, clear the immediate access route, secure pets and valuables, and disclose known leaks, pest history or suspect material before work begins.
What affects attic insulation cost?
Attic area, access, existing condition, removal, air sealing, material, ventilation details, garage or kneewall complexity and related preparation can all affect the estimate.
